of Lydia Yavorska, Princess Bariatinsky.
After introducing many famous Russian
playwrights to the London stage, and supporting the Suffragette movement,

Flower Festival and Fete
We were blessed with dry sunny weather for the fête which
meant that most events could take place in the church grounds.
It was
good to see so many people sitting enjoying cream teas, cakes and ice creams
while listening to the catchy rhythms of the Rude Mechanicals
or watching
the Morris dancing provided by the Old Shoreham Buccaneers. A couple of
brave souls even tried their hand (feet?) at one of the dances
and their
efforts, thanks to the careful tuition provided, earned them an enthusiastic
round of applause.
Meanwhile the children were decorating cupcakes and
gingerbread men or inspecting the toy stall
while their parents looked
for bargains among the books, plants and bric-a-brac on sale.
Others
retreated to the cool interior of the church to survey the superb flower
arrangements
or to sit and watch a rolling slideshow depicting the events
in the life of the church over the last year.
The fête was also the
occasion for the launch of the new St Nicolas’ cookery book,
eaturing
favourite recipes contributed by many parishioners. The books moved off the
stall very quickly
with many advance orders having been placed, so anyone
who would like a copy is advised to contact Len Batten as quickly as
possible.
It was an extremely successful day with well over £1000 being
raised.
Thanks are due to all those who helped with the setting up and
running of the stalls and also the musicians and dancers whose performances
added so much to the atmosphere.
